Let’s talk about soap!

Understanding the Difference: True Soap vs. Chemical Detergents

"Soap" often refers to various cleaning products, but many marketed as soap are synthetic detergents, which can be harsh on skin and the environment. True soap is made through saponification, combining fats or oils with an alkali, creating biodegradable and gentle cleaners. In contrast, commercial soaps often contain petrochemical-based detergents with additives, causing skin irritation and environmental harm. Misleading marketing can confuse consumers, highlighting the need to read labels and choose products with natural ingredients. By selecting authentic soap, consumers support sustainability and skin health.

My Soap-Making Journey

I make soap. I use lye and oils that combine together and turn into soap. I spent years dreaming of soap making and researching the process, ingredients, and properties of oils. I am still learning but much more confident in my knowledge and enjoy the process. The benefits are knowing what I am using, customizing for skin sensitivity, and learning about what different products do. The process can be both creative and frustrating at the same time.

Exploring New Techniques

Each batch presents an opportunity to experiment with various scents, colors, and textures, and allows me to express my creativity. However, the precision required in measuring ingredients can lead to unexpected challenges, making the learning curve steep but rewarding. Over time, I have developed a deeper understanding of the chemistry behind soap-making, which enhances both my skills and my appreciation for this craft. I am still learning and fine tuning recipes. Each soap batch is unique.

Soap has a shelf life. It is supposed to be used and enjoyed. When you buy a bar of soap please use it and enjoy it. To extend the life of your soap, permit it to dry between uses. Avoid leaving your soap sitting in water for obvious melting reasons.
