Navigating the Complex World of Oils in Soap Making
Who knew that oil (fats) could be so controversial? Plant- and animal-based oils that may have an environmental impact and are popular today but not tomorrow. It can be so confusing. I like using a variety of oils in recipes and learning what the benefits are, how the oils complement each other, and what oils have similar properties so I can substitute when allergies are involved.
Maximizing Value in Soap Formulation: Balancing Oil Benefits and Fragrance Choices
I am trying to get the biggest bang for the buck too. The saponification (soap-making process) greatly reduces the benefits of the oils so the more expensive ones I am learning to save for leave-on products or adding additional "super fat" to soap. For my soaping friends, what are your thoughts? It can be so overwhelming to a new formulator. Don't get me started on the fragrance oil vs. essential oil debate. I see both sides and the argument and believe there is a place for both or neither.
I just like to see the results of the formulations and avoid soap on a stick if possible.
Trends in Soaping
As with any industry there are trends that often occur that are driven by both the consumer and the producer. I do look and see what is trending in the soap and cosmetic industry and try to research the reason behind it. Just because something is trending does not mean I fully embrace the trend. On occasions the trend is driven by the producer due to price point and availability of the products, information, weather accurate or not, based on reported benefits of the oil, and other times it is the process to which the oil is created that will lead to market trends. With all oils, there is some for of process to separate the oil from its current state, these process can include heat, chemical extraction, pressing, or a combination. Some creators find the processes, environmental impact, and labor behind the production controversial leading to them to avoid using the oils. I try my hardest to find reputable sources to procure my supplies. Many of these processes have existed for centuries and have not had very many modifications. I am leery of anyone that tries to push their product as being so much better than anyone else because there is an ingredient in their product. I get it every soap maker is proud of their product and believes theirs is the best! All ingredients have benefits and disadvantages. My goal as a formulator is to find the way to maximize the benefits while finding ways to work with the disadvantages.
I am human, learning, and enjoy experimenting. My products are made with love, inspiration, and considerable thought into what I would like the outcome of the product to be to meet the needs of my customers. Understanding the uses of oils, the impact on the body, and the benefits are bases of my business. After all without oil, there wouldn't be soaps.
